Beginners Do's & Don’ts

Beginners usually play slower than more experienced players and this can irritate people who have been playing for a long time. The way to avoid this is to follow these simple steps and then you will fit in as if you have been playing for years!

1 Setting Up

Take 2 practice swings or less and always be ready to play your shot when it is your turn.
Try not to think too much before you swing as you need to stay fluid.
Beginners often stand over the ball too long and this inaction prevents a smooth and relaxed swing, so relax and enjoy the rhythm of the game - playing slowly leads to hesitation and overthinking your shots.

2 Moving Around the Course

Walk briskly between shots and don’t dawdle, don’t look for other players balls unless you can do so without delaying players behind. If this is not possible call following players through.

3 Ready to Move

Be ready to move on at the end of a hole, so don’t leave your bag where you have to walk back before you go to the next tee delaying following players further. It is a good habit to leave your bag/trolley en route to the next tee before you walk onto the green.

4 Scoring

Mark scorecards on the tee not on the green after holing out. Also don’t mark scorecards when it is your turn to play.

5 Talk & Walk

There is nothing more irritating than being ready to play your shot and the players in front are standing still and having a conversation so that you can’t play.

6 Staying close

All players should aim to stay close to the group in front not just ahead of the group behind.

7 Equality

At Manston all groups have equal standing so if you are playing slower than the groups in front and behind you call the following group through. To do this stand to the side of the fairway and wave the players behind through. This will keep them happy and will take the pressure off you and stop you having to hurry to stay ahead.

We hope you enjoy the experience of learning golf, if you are unsure of anything to do with how to play or rules or etiquette, please ask any of our staff at reception we are here to help.
